This year marks 35 years since I joined HSBC. In that time, I’ve been fortunate enough to live and work in three different continents. In each of them, I’ve worked closely alongside our clients to help them to grow their businesses, to tap into new markets and to capture new opportunities. So China has naturally been an integral part of my career.

I don’t think you can truly know HSBC without understanding our deep roots in China.

As a frequent visitor to the mainland, I’ve had the privilege of meeting clients whose families have banked with us since we were founded. I’ve witnessed the remarkable development of cities like Shanghai and Beijing over the past 30 years – and more recently the emergence of the Greater Bay Area and I’ve seen how China’s opening up has enabled it to integrate itself within the global economy.

At every turn, HSBC has been proud to play its part in supporting China’s development.

HSBC was, of course, founded to facilitate trade between East and West. Today we continue to connect businesses and investors with opportunities in Asia and around the world.

We’re the leading foreign bank in the development of the Greater Bay Area.

And we look forward to continuing to grow our business to help meet the demand for wealth management services and digital products.

We’re also playing a leading role globally in the transition to net zero.

I expect to see the industrial landscape of the world transformed over the next 10 years as businesses retool and re-engineer themselves, business models are evolved and old technologies are replaced by greener, cleaner alternatives.

I’m determined that we will help our clients to make these transitions.

China’s commitment to reaching net zero by 2060, the scale of its capital markets, its world-class businesses and its innovation capabilities, all mean it will be right at the forefront of reaching net zero.

The conversations I’ve had with governments and clients over the past 12 months have left me optimistic about what we can achieve.

There is widespread consensus that we have to be ambitious, there is also recognition that words alone aren’t enough and we’re now seeing practical action being taken and new partnerships being forged.

That co-operation will be key – and it needs to take a number of different forms. We need co-operation between the public and the private sectors, between businesses in different sectors, between banks that are otherwise hard competitors and between governments too.

To this end, I welcome the discussions ahead of us at this year’s China Development Forum.

HSBC is pleased to be presenting a paper on how the financial sector can transition to net zero. This is a vital issue given the need for finance to help our customers to make their own transitions. But there are practical and important issues that need to be addressed, including how to make net zero targets meaningful and how to report progress against those targets. Our paper will address these questions and more. And it underlines the need for the financial services sector to share ideas and best practice for the good of all of our customers.

I have always greatly valued the open discussion that the CDF allows amongst its partners. I’m sure that will be the case again this year – and I’m looking forward to taking part.
